Impossible Detail:The playing rules describe a helmet in seven sentences: presence, a facemask no more than five eighths of an inch, eye shields, where a manufacturer’s name may appear, and two labels on the back of the shell. They state no protective performance at all. The thresholds live in a standard the rulebook never names, the ranking everyone sees comes from a different machine again, and of the three groups it produces only one removes a helmet from play.

Impossible Detail:The rulebook capped the sole of a high jump shoe at 13 mm and set no limit at all on the marathon shoe. When a 40 mm road limit arrived in 2020, the regulation defined it at two coordinates — and the shoe control guidelines state that no sole thickness measurement is expected at competition. Routine control verifies a name against a register that records approval and holds no measurement.

Impossible Detail:The UCI regulated the bicycle’s parts but never the rider’s posture or bottom-bracket width. A self-built frame — no top tube, a 40 mm bottom bracket running on washing-machine bearings — broke a nine-year-old record while violating no printed rule. The tuck was banned roughly an hour before the 1994 World Championships, under a rule that was never written down.

Impossible Detail:Offside adjudication relied on roughly 50 fps optical vision — a human-scale margin. A 500 Hz inertial measurement unit inside the ball resolves the contact moment five hundred times a second, retiring visual judgment for raw-data compliance.
